Despite opening in the shadow of 2009's blockbuster, Avatar, Sherlock Holmes has still pulled in a very respectable US$300 million in the global box office to date. No real surprise then that Warner Bros want more. The second film is already said to be in pre-production, with filming set to begin this summer.
Rumours began when Downey Jr. pulled out of the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens film, which is to be directed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau. James Bond actor Daniel Craig is tipped to replace Downey Jr. in next year's release. Entertainment Weekly was able to confirm the link between Downey Jr's withdrawal from the project and the production of the Sherlock sequel.
Guy Ritchie is set to continue as director of the new film, with Jude Law and Rachel McAdams expected to rejoin Downey Jr. in reprising their roles. But the biggest news is that of who will play the super-villain Moriarty. Though it had not been confirmed by either director or actor, Brad Pitt was rumoured to have played the shady villain in the first movie, and is widely expected to reprise this role in the sequel.
Production for the film is expected to begin in June.
